3D Simulation of Flow over a Triangular Broad-Crested Weir
Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
On natural streams where it is necessary to measure wide range of discharges, a triangular control has several advantages. Firstly, it provides a large breadth at high flows, so that the backwater effect is not excessive. Secondly, at low flows the breadth is reduced so that the sensivity of the weir remains acceptableBroad-crested weirs are defined as structures where the streamlines run parallel to each other over the weir crown, and the crest of the weir is horizontal. They are widely used in open channels, rivers and irrigation systems. Basic experiments together with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model were conducted on triangular broad-crested weir to investigate the flow pattern over triangular broad-crested weirs. In this study, volume of fluid (VOF) free surface model three turbulence model of the RNG k–ε, k–ε and the large eddy simulation (LES) to find the water level profile and velocity streamlines. The computational results showed a close agreement with experimental data obtained in the laboratory. Also, results indicate that RNG model has the maximum accuracy in comparison with other turbulence models used in this study

Assessment of the Possible Extent of Loss of Life (LOL) Downstream of Large Dams due to Dam Failure Flooding
High flooding downstream of a dam could cause severe damages to the people and property. The most important damage is the loss of life which does not have any substitute. In this study, the extent of loss of life (LOL...
Estimation of possible Flooding Risks for Enhancement in Flood Resilience in River Valleys
Flood is one of the major natural hazards which could cause great disaster. In order to enhance the flood resilience, the proper estimation of flood risks mainly possible loss of life is very much important. Catastrop...
3D Investigation of Flow Hydraulic in U Shape Meander Bendswith Constant, Decreasing and Increasing Width
In meandering rivers, the flow pattern is highly complex, with specific characteristics at bends that are not observed along straight paths. A numerical model can be effectively used to predict such flow fields. Since...
Flow over a Broad-Crested Weir in Subcritical Flow Conditions, Physical Syudy
Basic experiments were conducted on rectangular broadcrested weirs with different geometry. It was found that the discharge coefficient of a rectangular broad-crested weir is related to upstream total head above the cr...
Experimental Study on Lozenge Collar Affection in Reduce Amount of Scouring Around Bridge Piers
Scour happening around bridges Pier is one of the major reasons to bridge destruction. At present time, there are various methods to prevent scour of bridges bases. One method is to set protector boards (collars) arou...
