3D Simulation of Flow over a Triangular Broad-Crested Weir

Journal Title: Journal of River Engineering - Year 2014, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

On natural streams where it is necessary to measure wide range of discharges, a triangular control has several advantages. Firstly, it provides a large breadth at high flows, so that the backwater effect is not excessive. Secondly, at low flows the breadth is reduced so that the sensivity of the weir remains acceptableBroad-crested weirs are defined as structures where the streamlines run parallel to each other over the weir crown, and the crest of the weir is horizontal. They are widely used in open channels, rivers and irrigation systems. Basic experiments together with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model were conducted on triangular broad-crested weir to investigate the flow pattern over triangular broad-crested weirs. In this study, volume of fluid (VOF) free surface model three turbulence model of the RNG k–ε, k–ε and the large eddy simulation (LES) to find the water level profile and velocity streamlines. The computational results showed a close agreement with experimental data obtained in the laboratory. Also, results indicate that RNG model has the maximum accuracy in comparison with other turbulence models used in this study
