A clinical study of hollow viscus injury in the cases of abdominal trauma

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: In the day to day life trauma is the major cause of mortality and morbidity. Abdominal organs injury is third most common injury following extremities and head injury. In the present study we made efforts to highlight common pattern of various parameters, in the patients having hollow viscus injury in the cases of abdominal trauma. Objective: To determine the common presentation of pattern and to evaluate outcome of hollow viscus injury from blunt abdominal trauma. Methods: This was a cross-sectional observational study including patients with blunt abdominal trauma leading to hollow viscus injury admitted in G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Randomly selected a total of 100 patients with hollow viscus injury due to blunt abdominal trauma, who underwent laparotomy at our institute, were taken as study population. Data regarding clinical presentation, anatomical distribution, management and outcome were recorded and analysed. Results: Out of 100 patients 64% were men and 36% were women. Road traffic accident was the most common mechanism of injury (66%). Pain in abdomen was most commonly presenting symptom in 100% study population. On USG examination absence peristalsis was seen in 58% followed by presence of free fluid in 55% study population. Most commonly performed procedure was primary repair and closure of the perforation (68%). Post-operative complication wound infection was seen in 24% study population. Average hospital stay was 1 to 10 days for 68% patients under study. Conclusion: Although early recognition of hollow viscus injuries from blunt abdominal trauma may be difficult in all cases, it is very important due to its life threatening potential. Early detection helps in prognosis.
