A comparative study of Lichtenstein mesh hernioplasty vs modified Bassini’s repair along with tanner’s slide
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Many types of hernia repair are described, traditional methods like modified Bassini’s repair (MBR), Shouldice repair and Lichtenstein mesh repair (LMR) and currently the laparoscopic mesh repair. Numerous comparative randomized trials have clearly demonstrated the superiority of the LMR over the MBR. Aim: To evaluate outcomes of two different repairs Lichtenstein mesh hernioplasty versus modified Bassini’s along with Tanner slide to achieve tension free repair. Material and Methods: A total of 60 patients with direct and indirect inguinal hernia were divided into two groups: Group A: Cases undergoing repair by Lichtenstein's technique, Group B: Cases undergoing repair by Modified Bassini’s Repair with Tanner’s slide. All patients were followed up for a period of six months. The outcomes of the both techniques were compared. Results: Post-operative pain which was evaluated on post-operative day 1,3 and 7 using VAS scale was 5.6333,3.783 and 2.400 in Group-A and 1.6316 and 5.033,3.367 in Group-B. In Group-A average surgical site infection was 13.33 and in Group-B 10.97 (p value0.015). Both Groups showed healthy surgical scar. Seroma formation in post-operative patient in Group-A was noted in 3 cases (10%) and in Group-B was 1 case (3.33%). No recurrence noted in either group. Conclusion: Both Lichtenstein’s meshplasty and Modified Bassini's repair with Tanner's slide are equally great methods. In any case, Modified Bassini’s with Tanner's slide had benefits in shorter surgery duration, low post-operative complications.
