A comparative study of primary closure versus delayed primary wound closure in the patients with complicated appendicitis

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Appendicitis is a medical emergency that almost always requires prompt surgery to remove the appendix. Delayed primary wound closure (DPC) is a procedure which aims at reducing the rate of SSI by suturing a wound later after proper dressing for 3 to 5 days. This study aimed at finding DPC as better method for wound closure in appendectomy for complicated appendicitis. Aim and objective: To compare the primary closure and delayed primary wound closure in patients of complicated appendicitis with reference to wound infection and length of stay. Material and Methods: Total 100 patients were included in the study. They were randomized in two groups. First group underwent PC for wound management and second group underwent DPC. Both methods compared with reference to wound infection and length of stay in hospital. Results and Discussion: Both groups of patients were similar in terms of sex, age and medical factors. Wound infection in PC group was more (36%) than wound infection in DPC group. (4%) Difference between theses 2 groups is statistically significant. (P <0.05) Length of stay in hospital was significantly more (9.02± 1.3 days) in PC group as compared to DPC (6.82± 1.1 days).( P <0.05)
