Study of Management of Inguinal Hernia

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Inguinal and scrotal swellings are frequently encountered in the surgical practice. Inguinal Hernia is one of the biggest challenges in surgical practice because of its frequency, complexity, as well as socio-economic consequences. Surgical repair of inguinal hernias is the most commonly performed general surgical procedure. Objective: To report the incidence of post- operative complications after hernia repair such as painful scar, sinuses, infection, hematoma/seroma and urinary retention, etc. Materials and Methods: Bassini’s hernia repair with Meshplasty was performed in the patients admitted with inguinal hernia in a tertiary care centre. They were serially followed up and recorded with data on postoperative day 7, 1st month, 3rd month, and 6th month. Incidences of recurrence rate, and other post-operative complications like painful scar, urinary retention, hematoma, sinus, and infection, wound dehiscence, etc. were noted. Results: In this study showed recurrence rate of 0.98 % and very low incidences of other postoperative complications like painful scar 1.96%, sinus 0%, retention of urine 58.82%, hematoma 0.98%, and infection 2.94%; as compared to published data with different techniques. Conclusions: Considering very low percentage of complications and fairly basic investment required, “Bassini repair with Meshplasty” can be safely recommended as a cost effective method in rural setting. However, this being a single center study, we recommend multicentric trial.
