A Comparative Study on the interaction of some metal ions with Glutamic Acid and LCysteine as Primary Ligands and Thymine as a Secondary Ligand using Potentiometry in Aqueous Medium
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2012, Vol 2, Issue 4
Abstract
The formation constants of the ternary (1:1:1) and quaternary (1:1:1:1) complexes of PbII, HgII , CdII, ZnII, CoII, and NiII with Glutamic acid / L-Cysteine as primary ligand and Thymine as secondary ligand have been determined potentiometrically in aqueous medium. A comparative study of the said ligands with respect to their stability, solution structures and quantitative aspects has been done. Acid dissociation constants of the ligands used and the formation constants of the ternary and quaternary complexes were determined at 37±1o C and in ionic strength I = 0.1 M NaNO3. The stability constants of all the quaternary complexes formed by L-Cysteine are relatively higher than that of complexes of Glutamic acid probably due to the high affinity of thiol group for heavy metals. Complexation equilibria have been deduced on the basis of speciation curves obtained through SCOGS computer program. The sequence of overall stability constants for both the primary ligands have been compared and discussed.
