Effect of Biodiesel Spentwash on Seed Germination, Seedling Growth, Dry Matter Production and Chlorophyll Content of Paddy (Oryza sativa L.) and French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) crops

Abstract

A laboratory experiment was carried out to study the effect of biodiesel spentwash (BSW) on seed germination, seedling growth, dry matter production and chlorophyll content in paddy variety KMP101-Tanu and French bean variety Arkakomal seeds. Paddy and French bean seeds were raised in petriplates irrigated with various concentrations of biodiesel spentwash (0 (control), 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100%). At lower dilutions, paddy and French bean showed favorable effects on seed germination, seedling growth, dry matter production and chlorophyll content. Among them 75 and 100% concentrations of spentwash caused inhibitory effects. The study suggests that the spentwash can be used safely for paddy and French bean cultivation, only after proper treatment and dilutions.
