A COMPARISON OF LOCAL AND NATIONAL NEWSPAPERS’S AGENDAS IN TURKEY

Abstract

The power of means of mass communication to set a public agenda is at its peak during election periods. Public’s need for information especially during periods of political crisis is provided by the media and public can make a political choice in this direction. Local and national media which have different agendas under normal circumstances has been observed to focus on political agenda during periods of elections. This study aims to show similarities and differences between the general and political agendas of local and national newspapers prior to 1st November 2015 elections. The study has been carried out in the form of ‘comparison between agendas’ in accordance with the research tradition within the framework of the approach of setting an agenda. Also, one of the aims of this study is to display differences in perception of news making between local and national newspapers over news production practises. In this study, investigatedHaber Türk, Milliyet, Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet and Sabah newspapers from national media.Kayseri Haber, BüyükKayseri, Kayseri Anadolu Haber, Kayseri Star Haber and Kayseri Olay newspapers have been scanned from the local media. It has been shown within the scope of this study that the agenda of both local and national newspapers show parallelism and that they both give importance to political news. However, it has been observed differences in the production process of the news brought up to the local and national agenda and in the way that political advertisements cover pages.
