A Conversation Analytic Perspective into Teaching Turkish as a Foreign/Second Language
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Teaching Turkish (IJRTT) - Year 2021, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
This study aims to present an evaluation of potential contributions of Conversation Analysis, an influential methodology of research within the field of Applied Linguistics, to teaching Turkish as a foreign/second language, which has also a growing number of research on various areas in Turkey. Conversation Analysis has gained a major role across language teaching contexts around the world in particular to uncover the details of the dynamic nature of interaction between teacher and learner with an emic and micro-analytic perspective. With this in mind, Conversation Analysis is able to reveal seen-but-unnoticed (Garfinkel, 1967) micro details of interaction which enable participants to achieve institutional or individual goals in mundane or institutional talk. Foreign language classes also constitute an institutional setting with such an organization of interaction. The context in Turkish as a foreign/second language classroom settings is no different. Hence, it is thought that it is important to benefit from the opportunities offered by the Conversation Analysis methodology in an academic and practical framework, both in determining and solving the interaction-related problems encountered while realizing the pedagogical goals. However, the research on Conversation Analysis in Turkish literature is still scarce, especially in terms of teaching Turkish as a foreign/second language. Thus, the present study will introduce the seminal works that reflect the principles of Conversation Analysis, in addition to the studies in Turkish informed by the research methodology. In this framework, the potential contribution of Conversation Analysis to Turkish as a foreign/second language context will be discussed in terms of classroom interactional competence, testing and evaluation and material design.
