A Detailed Anatomical Study On Accessory Spleen

Abstract

Background: In any infection or disease condition spleen may enlarge. Spleen plays an important role in immune response to protect the body from bacterial infections, and also recycles iron by removing old red blood cells. A vast knowledge of spleen is important for physicians, surgeons and radiologists. Present work was done to give enough information about spleen and compare the results with previous studies. Materials and Methods: The material of present work consists of 100 adult spleens. Apparently normal human cadaveric spleens from both sexes were selected. After opening the abdominal cavity we looked for the accessory spleens. Spleens were removed from abdominal cavity by conventional dissection method. Spleens were washed under tap water to clean the fatty tissue and debris. The Morphology, morphometry, course and distribution of splenic artery was studied. Results: In 4% of specimens presence of accessory spleen is noted, located along gastrosplenic ligament. Conclusion: A detailed anatomical knowledge about spleen is helpful for the surgeon in doing partial splenectomy and intervention radiologists and physician for objective determination of splenomegaly.
