A Hungarian Turcologist in Turkey: Tibor Halasi-Kun

Abstract
Tibor Halasi-Kun; Hungarian Turcologist; worked as director and guest professor between the years 1943-1948 at the Institute of Hungarology at the Faculty of Humanities in Ankara. Halasi-Kun; who was taught by the world-famous Turcologist Gyula Németh; led numerous notable scientific and cultural projects in cooperation with various institutions while simultaneously carrying on his studies in this period. His works were entirely appropriate for main goals of the Faculty which was founded for the reappraisal of the Turkish history; language and culture. He had to leave his post both because his country lagged behind the Iron Curtain after World War II and because the idea in question was not appreciated sufficiently in Turkey; consequently he was forced to settle in the US like other foreign scientists sharing the same fate. This study aims to present Halasi-Kun’s career in Turkey that has remained understudied to date and also to illuminate his role in the history of the era of science and culture according to new data.
