A LÍNGUA INGLESA COMO UM PRODUTO CONSUMÍVEL: A PRÁTICA DO CONVENCIMENTO NO IMAGINÁRIO CAPITALISTA

Journal Title: Revista Competência - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

Nowadays, English teaching has occupied a privileged space not only in regular schools, but in specialized language courses as well. In the market scenario, the English language is influential due to demands of a globalized world. Thus, learning English is not understood as a subjective destabilization process, one that takes the subject out of his/her stabilized world by the mother language, but learning English is strategically just a search for a leading position in the market. Inside this selfish thinking and competitive approach, the advertising production ends up constructing the imaginary that there is no outstanding position without an absolute competence in English speaking. Therefore, from the perspective of French Discourse Analysis in a dialogue with sociological context of the current period of capitalism, this paper tries to outline this development and analyzes some slogans of a given language course in order to show how the language is seen as a product to be consumed.
