A. MEILLET’S CONCEPTION OF GENDER ORIGIN WITHING THE CONTEXT OF INDO-EUROPEAN LINGUISTICS

Abstract
The article deals with the key issues of gender genesis in the works of such linguists as J. Grimm, K. Brugmann et al. On the background of the current linguistic tradition we focus on A. Meillet’s theory. We distinguished the basic aspects of his hypothesis on the gender genesis sequence and content, theories about the development of feminine from masculine, ideas about neuter as a vestige, semantic aspects of the category of gender. The article emphasizes on the importance of A. Meillet’s ideas about animate – inanimate genders followed by a later stage of the three-component system of gender. There are also modern linguists’ views on A. Meillet’s theory.
