A New Aza-Indigo Dye and Pigment

Abstract

A new and unequivocal synthesis of Aza-indigo is described. In this process or reaction, a hexacyclic heterocyclic compound, 2-aminopyridine was used as the substrate. The parent compound Aza-indigo or pyridinylindigo was obtained by alkylation of 2-aminopyridine using monochloroacetic acid to produce pyridinylglycine, an isolable intermediate compound. Condensation of this compound with a mixture of potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide and sodamide gave an indoxyl which on oxidation with ferric chloride and concentrated hydrochloric acid yielded the parent compound, a dark- blue dye. The intense colouration, ease of preparation in good yield and ready reduction with Na2S2O4 and reoxidation by atmospheric oxygen make this compound a good vat dye. This dark blue dye was found to be good a colourant for paper and different fabrics such as cotton, polyester, dacron, silk and damask.
