A PILOT STUDY ON PREVALENCE OF SEVERE ACUTE MALNUTRITION IN RURAL POPULATION AMONG PRE – SCHOOL CHILDREN AT A TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL

Abstract

Malnutrition is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children throughout the world. India is home to greatest population of severely malnourished children in the world and accounts for over 20% of underweight deaths and 2.1 million children do not survive up to 5 years of age. Objective: The main objective is to study the Prevalence of Severe acute malnutrition in a Tertiary care teaching hospital. Methods: This hospital based descriptive study was conducted over a period of 3months in Nutrition Rehabilitation center (NRC) department of pediatrics. The sample size was 50. In this study we include children of age group 0-5 years admitted with SAM. Children with Mild to Moderate Acute Malnutrition and outpatient were excluded. The data was obtained using specially designed proformas. Results and conclusion: In our study we observe 50 malnourished children in the span of 3 months. Our pilot study reveals that most of the malnourished children belong to rural areas with un-hygienic conditions and their parents were illiterates. This study indicates the socio-demographic details like age of the malnourished child, gender of the child, early marriage of the mother (below 18 years), number of the children in the family, nuclear families, living areas and immunization status were associated to higher risk of children’s poor nutritional status.
