A prospective study of operative versus conservative management in patients with an appendicular lump

Abstract
Background: The cases of acute appendicitis with mass in right iliac fossa is increasing now a days due to liberal use of antibiotics. The aim of study is to analyze early appendicectomy verses conservative management followed by interval appendicectomy in management of appendicular mass. Methods: The comparative study was done from surgical ward patients having appendicular mass, undergone either early appendicectomy or conservative anagement followed by interval appendicectomy ,from June 2010 to December 2012.Total 30 patients were studied in each group. Results: In one group, all 30 patients undergone early appendicectomy and in onother group 24 patients undergone interval appendicectomy following conservative management(successfully) and 6 patients undergone emergency surgery due to failed conservative management. Conclusions: Early appendicectomy is found to be more beneficial as compared to conservative management in appendicular mass as it reduces hospital stay,expenses and delayed complications due to misdiagnosis.
