A RESEARCH ON VIEWS OF TURKISH SEAFARERS ON MARITIME EDUCATION/TRAINING AND JOB SATISFACTION AT SEA

Journal Title: Denizcilik Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 10, Issue 2

Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to determine and analyze the Turkish seafarers’ views on maritime education in Turkey and job satisfaction at sea and to present some recommendations. For this purpose, a questionnaire form was created and applied on 652 Turkish seafarers. The data obtained by the questionnaire were classified and analyzed with SPSS 21 software. The main findings of the analysis are as follows; While about 50% of 'Deck' and 'Machinery' department seafarers who responded to the related questions in the questionnaire, consider the maritime education/trainings given on land as 'Sufficient' or 'Very Sufficient' in work life on board ships, that rate is around 35 % for 'Assistant' department seafarers. It is observed that even if it varies according to the seafarer competencies, about 50% to 70% of the seafarers stated that they would not continue to work on board ships if they could work on land. It is also observed that the desire to work on land is over 50% in all age groups of seafarers and reaches 68% in participants aged 25-44 years. It is noteworthy that 59.8% of seafarers under the age of 24 stated that they would not continue to work on board ships if they had the opportunity to work on land. As a result, it is considered that further efforts are needed to increase the effectiveness and benefit level of the maritime trainings on working life onboard ships, to develop a more selective system for maritime student acceptance, to improve seafarers’ recruitment and placement processes, to prevent burnout syndrome and to increase job satisfaction on board ships.
