A study of clinical profile of the patients with HIV having surgical diseases

Abstract

Background: Presently, the HIV/AIDS epidemic represents the most serious public health problem in India. It is estimated that more than 33 million people are living with HIV and AIDS around the globe Aims and Objectives: To Study Clinical Profile of the patients with HIV having surgical Diseases. Methodology: After approval from institutional ethical committee this cross sectional study was carried out in the patients admitted in our hospital, attending surgical OPD of a tertiary health care centre, who were HIV positive. All patients undergone the standard investigation like ELISA /Tridot those who showed positive results were included into the study. Detailed information of the patients like age, sex, any surgical illness if any was noted. Diagrammatic presentation and Mean ±SD other statistical analysis done of excel sheets provided by Microsoft for Windows 10 version. Result: There were 54406 patients were admitted / attended in the hospital out of them 896 patients were HIV positive (1.64%), Among these HIV patients, 136 patients were suffering from different surgical diseases (15.17%). Out of 136 patients, 92 (68%) patients were Males, 44(32%) patients were Female (2:1). The incidence was maximum in 3rd to 5th decade (59%) and mean age was 41 Yrs. (Range 32-51Yrs.) Out of 136 patients 68% patients were males and 32% patients were females. The majority of the patients were of Abscess formation i.e. 25.00%, followed by Other -19.12%, Fissure-10.29%, Pleural effusion -7.35%, Fistula and Appendicitis-5.15%, Pneumothorax and Pancreatitis and Head injury -4.41%, Lymphadenopathy-3.68%, Abdominal koch’s and Cellulitis -3.68%, Hydrocele -2.94%. The majority of the patients were having abscess in the region of Perianal 47.06%, followed by Parietal in 8.82%. Conclusion: It can be concluded from our study the prevalence of HIV was 1.64% and the majority of the patients were in the age group of 30-50, the most common surgical problem was abscess formation followed by miscellaneous surgical problem, fissure, pleural effusion and in abscess formation abscess in the region of Perianal and Parietal regions.
