Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: post-operative surgical site infections are more commonly seen worldwide. Antibiotics with different action spectrums were studied for the prevention of post-operative surgical site infections. This study compares ciprofloxacin and metronidazole versus ceftriaxone and metronidazole. Aim and objective: To study the effectiveness of ceftriaxone versus ciprofloxacin and metronidazole for the prevention of post-surgical wound infections Methodology: Total 200 patients studied in two groups at Chougule Hospital, Kolhapur. Group A received ciprofloxacin with metronidazole post operatively and Group B received ceftriaxone with metronidazole. outcome was measured as development of surgical site infections. Data was compared for both the groups with appropriate statistical tests. Results: Contaminated wound and duration of surgery >30 mins significantly affected the surgical site infection (p value <0.05) hemoglobin level <10 g/dl had shown more infections than that of Hb>10 g/dl but the difference was statistically not significant. Ceftriaxone group had less post-operative surgical site infections (5%) than that of ciprofloxacin group (15%).
