A study of factors associated with mortality in severe head injuryat tertiary health care centre

Abstract
Background: Traumatic brain injury is leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Every year about 1.5 million affected people die and several millions receive emergency treatment. Aims and Objectives Aims and Objectives:To Study Factors associated with mortality in severe head injury at tertiary health care centre. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study carried out in the patients admitted with head injury at tertiary health care centre during the six month period i.e.January to June 2018 in the six month period we have studied 108 patients with head injury admitted to our tertiary neurosurgery centre. All data entered in excel sheet and analyzed by excel windows 10 software. Result:In our study we have seen that the majority of the patients were in the age group of 40-50were 35.19%, followed by 30-40 Were 25.00%;50-60 were 17.59%; 20-30 were 12.04%; >60were 10.19%. The majority of the patients were Malei.e. 72.22% followed by Female were 27.78%. The majority of the patients were with GCS 13-14 were 55.56%; followed by 15 were 31.48%; 8-12 were 8.33%; <8 were 4.63%. The majority of the patients recovered i.e. Improved were 85.19%; Improved with residual paralysis in 8.33%; Death occurred in 6.48%. Themost common associated factorswereMode of injuryby RTAin 100.00%; followed byTime gap between Trauma to admission >1hrin 100.00%;GCS <8in 85.71%;Alcohol abuseIn 71.43%;OLD AGE IN 27%.K/c/o CVD 15.45% AND DIABETES IT IS 30.25% ).Conclusion:It can be concluded from our study that the majority of the patients were in the age group of 40-50, majority of the patients improved i.e. 85% and the factors associated with the death in the patients wereTime gap between Trauma to admission >2 hr; GCS <8; Alcohol abuse; Oldageand associated co-morbidities like CVDand Diabetes.
