Clinical profile of cases with acute peritonitis at a tertiary care hospital

Abstract

The first peritoneal response to infection occurs within minutes of bacterial challenge. Bacteria and debris is cleared through the diaphragmatic lacunae into the lymphatic system. After a bacterial challenge, positive blood cultures can be demonstrated in less than 12 minutes. Our study was conducted at Medical college Hospital on all patients diagnosed as peritonitis and admitted in surgical ward. The study being prospective study, all patients admitted to surgical wards as above were considered according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients in our study had different etiologies as for the cause of peritonitis. Perforations were commonest of which Duodenal perforation was the commonest cause (65.4%) but mortality was seen only in one patient with duodenal perforation(0.9%), mortality was seen in two cases of acute pancreatitis (1.8%),one case of acute intestinal obstruction and one case of ileal perforation.
