A study of open versus closed method of drainage of breast abscess

Abstract
Background: Breast abscess is commonly observed in all breast diseases. Breast abscess affects mother as well as babies as they are devoid of breast feeding from the affected breast. Present study was conducted to find better method in treatment of breast abscess. Aim and Objective: To compare the open and closed method of drainage of breast abscess in terms of hospital stay, number of dressings, analgesics requirement. Methodology: Total 100 patients of breast abscess were studied. First group was treated with incision and abscess kept open with dressings. Second group was treated by incision and suturing abscess and keeping a drain in situ. 50 patients were randomly allocated in each group. Data was compared for number of dressings required, hospital stay, analgesia required and recurrence in both the groups. Results and Discussion: Breast abscess was common in 15-25 years lactating women. Right side and upper outer quadrant were most common site. Closed method had significantly less duration of analgesia, shorter hospital stay and less recurrence.
