A study on the effect of situational language on emotion elicitation in people with impulsive personality tendencies

Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 10

Abstract

Objective To explore the emotion-evoking effects of situational language materials on people with impulsive personality tendencies, so as to achieve objective identification of people with impulsive personality tendencies and improve the accuracy and validity of psychological measurement. Methods Eye-tracking technology was used to objectively collect the eye movement indicators of the impulsive group (n = 170) and the non-impulsive group (n = 171) while reading situational language materials. Independent samples t-test and ANOVA were used to analyze the data, and the recognition model of people with impulsive personality tendencies was established by means of machine learning. Results There were significant differences in response indicators under situational language between the impulsive group and non-impulsive group (t = 20. 95, P < 0. 001 ) . In the eye movement indicators, mean fixation duration [ F(1, 339) = 7. 522, P = 0. 006,ηp2= 0. 022], gaze duration [F(1, 339) = 38. 758, P < 0. 001, ηp2= 0. 103] and pupil change values [F(1, 339) = 15. 416,P < 0. 001, ηp2= 0. 043] of both groups of subjects interacted significantly within both regions of interest. The highest recognition accuracy of situational language materials was 0. 912 on four models of decision trees, random forests, K-nearest neighbor algorithm, and support vector machines. Conclusion In terms of eye movement and response indicators, situational language materials show stronger emotion-evoking effects on people with impulsive personality tendencies, with a significant differentiating effect between impulsive person and non-impulsive person.
