A Study on the Effects of Urea and Molasses on the Nutritional Value of Nut grass (CyperusRotundus) Forage Silos of Sistan Region

Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 6, Issue 12

Abstract

This research was conducted aiming to study the changes of chemical components and improvement of Nut grass forage silos digestibility with the addition of urea (0, 2.5, and 5 g) and molasses (0, 10, and 15 percent) using the factorial design with 3 repetitions. The chemical components of the dried silo includes dry matter, organic matter, crud protein, ash, water soluble carbohydrates, NDF, ADF. To measure the degradability percentage and dry matter digestibility, the treatments included inserting the fistula using nylon bags and administering the gas production test on three bulls (Sistani race) respectively. The results showed that the treatment with 5 percent urea and the control group had the highest and lowest CP respectively which indicates a significant difference (P<0.05). The treatment with 2.5% urea + 15% molasses had the least amounts of NDF and ADF while the control group had the highest amounts of these two (P<0.05). Also, the studied treatments showed significant differences at different incubation hours regarding the degradability (P<0.05). Results of the produced gas (mg.ml) showed that at different incubation hours, the treatments 7 and 8 produced the highest amounts of gas and had the highest amounts of digestibility while the control group showed the least amounts of these two. On the whole, based on information and results taken from the chemical components, degradability, and digestibility of the studied treatments, it can be concluded that the treatments 7 and 8 were superior to others.
