A TRADITIONAL “NAZIRE” WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: A GHAZEL WITH A RHYME FROM ġEYH GALIB TO NEDIM

Journal Title: Journal of the Human and Social Science Researches - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 4

Abstract

Although the new understanding brought by the modern world of literature seems to make it necessary to question the old, the actual aim is to employ new methods for better interpretation of the old. Comparative literature is the expression of this search or effort. While it was possible in the beginning to examine works in two different languages and cultures using comparative literary methods, in time, the range of comparative studies has expanded and the possibility to compare works of the same genre in a certain country‟s literature has emerged. This enables a better understanding of the cultural heritage and improves the viewpoint towards literary works. The traditional methods used for centuries in classical Turkish literature should not be viewed merely as a habit of the old world, it is also an indicator of how a period was established and operated. The tradition of “nazîre” writing is one of these methods. In this study, a sample of this tradition a “Ghazel with a rhyme from Şeyh Gâlib to Nedîm” will be analysed within the framework of comparative literature. The gazals in question here will be examined in terms of the poets, their literary circles, the structure of the two poems, their main and supporting ideas, the figures of speech used in the poems as well as their language and style. The examination that follows this determination of possible headings of comparison will focus on the similarities and differences between the two poets and their works.
