ABRASIVE WEAR RESISTANCE OF METAL-POLYMER COMPOSITES

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2010, Vol 233, Issue 5

Abstract

The paper presents the results of resistance to abrasive wear of various material junctions. The purpose of this study was to assess the potential application of composite materials for the regeneration of friction pairs of devices for transport to landfills using fly ashes formed during combustion of solid fuels in power plants. Cenospheres of defined chemical and granulometric composition, which is the main component of fly ashes, were adopted as abrasive material. The friction and wear tests were performed using a chemically setting metal-polymer composite with various strength properties. Chemically setting metal-polymer composites were imposed on a steel roller, and machined to the desired size to cooperate with traditional construction materials, steel and bronze. Thermosetting resin based metal-polymer composites were tested for the possibility of replacing metal construction materials. The friction and wear tests were performed in conformed contact by a T-07 black-on-ring tester in the presence of selected abrasive material. Tribological tests were conducted at a speed of 0.1 m/s and 1 MPa pressure. A high resistance to abrasive wear of metal-polymer composites was demonstrated.
