INVESTIGATION OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE TO ABRASIVE WEAR OF AlCrTiN MULTILAYER COATINGS DEPOSITED USING THE CATHODIC VACUUM ARC PVD PROCESS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 246, Issue 6

Abstract

The properties of the AlCrTiN multilayer coatings deposited in the cathodic vacuum arc PVD process on the W 320 hot working tool steel are presented in the paper. An influence of the structure of the multilayer Cr/CrN/AlCrN/AlCrTiN and Ti/TiN/AlTiN/AlCrTiN coatings on their mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance to abrasive wear has been determined. The results of the tribological tests carried out in dry friction show that the Cr/CrN/AlCrN/AlCrTiN coating exhibits an improved resistance to abrasive wear at the temperature of 500ºC, which is better than the Ti/TiN/AlTiN/AlCrTiN coating. It has been proved that it can be attributed to the lower residual stresses and higher toughness of the CrN and AlCrN layers in the Cr/CrN/AlCrN/AlCrTiN coating than the respective ones (TiN and AlTiN) in the Ti/TiN/AlTiN/AlCrTiN coating. The CrN and AlCrN layers constitute an internal transition zone between the Cr adhesion layer and the outer AlCrTiN functional layer in the Cr/CrN/AlCrN/AlCrTiN multilayer coatings.
