Academic communication as a category of modern Applied Linguistics: Concept genesis.

Abstract

The article deals with the phenomenon of academic communication and its interpretation in the modern linguistic and linguo-didactic discourse. It aims at systematization and classification of various approaches to studying academic discourse in both interdisciplinary and disciplinary contexts. Research methods of analysis, synthesis, generalization and classification have been applied to attain the study objectives, namely: a) to define the related concepts of “academic communication”, “academic discourse”, “academic discourse community”, “academic genre”; b) to identify the genres dominating modern university academic discourse; c) to suggest ways of extrapolating linguistic knowledge to developing effective methods of academic communication instruction. As a result of literature analysis three main approaches to studying academic discourse have been singled out: 1) linguo-stylistic approach focusing on structural and functional characteristics of academic genres and registers; 2) rhetorical approach concentrating on the processes and strategies of perception and production of texts as communicative products; 3) sociocultural approach placing the main emphasis on language socialization as the means of adaptation of an individual to effective participation in academic and disciplinary communities of practice. The concept of academic communication has been defined as any type, form or case of communication that takes place within the academic discourse community, aims at achieving individual or group goals related to learning or research, and uses academic genres as its main tools. Linguistic insights into the nature of academic communication have immense educational implications as they play the leading part in the development of methods and technologies of academic communication instruction in higher education.
