The representation of urban space in Daniel Pennac’s detective texts.

Abstract

The article highlights the ways of portraying the urban space in detective works of Daniel Pennac, who is a contemporain French author. The investigation aims at determining the specific features of the presentation of the urban environment in the Daniel Pennac’s detective texts, implementing the pragmatic intention of the author. A characteristic place where the events of the "black detective" take place are the city, namely, Paris, Vercors and Belleville – the 20th district of Paris in which the vast majority of the population are the immigrants from different parts of the world. The texts of Daniel Pennac are inherent in the representation of the urban environment, based on the opposition between the appearance and the inner essence. The image of urban landscapes is built on the contrast of the semantic values of light and darkness, center and periphery. However, the stereotype image of a large city is different from the representation of Belleville. Here, the toponymic details not only contribute to the realism of the narration but create the effect of the reader's presence, and allow to create a virtual quarter plan as well. The contrast expressed on the lexical level does not actually does not indicate the discrepancy between the appearance of the inner essence of the urban environment. By correlating the concepts of heat and cold the author shows that different and, at first glance, incompatible concepts do can exist side by side. This reveals the author's subjective modality, i.e. his conception of the harmonious multiethnic and multicultural society of modern France.
