Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2015, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Although there is presently no consensus for a psychological definition of forgiveness, it is defined as a positive and healthy response which includes the decision to let go of anger, resentment, hurt, and a desire for vengeance after a transgression. Objective: The aim of the study was to investigate psychometric properties of Willingness to Forgive Scale (WTFS), which is a tool aimed to measure a person’s willingness to forgive. Methods: 151 paticipants between the ages 18-26 who are students in different departments of Ege University (81 female, 70 male) completed WTFS and Forgiving Personality Scale (FPS). Psychometric properties of WTFS were tested by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach’s Alpha value, split half reliability and concurrent validity method. Results: In order to determine the construct validity of WTFS, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. The factor analyses results showed a good fit with the structure of the original form. The Cronbach’s alpha for the WTFS was .83. As concurrent validity, the correlation between WTFS and FPS was .21 (p<.01). Discussion: The psychometric properties of the Turkish version of WTFS showed a satisfactory level of reliability and validity in Turkish sample.
