ADDED RESISTANCE OF SHIPS DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS

Journal Title: Biuletyn Instytutu Morskiego - Year 1992, Vol 19, Issue 1

Abstract

The present paper presents some results obtained in researches realized by the author in collaboration of the Maritime Institute in Gdansk and the Technical University in West Berlin. The purpose of the task has been to employ reports from voyages of ships and measurements carried out by ships' crews for the identification of resistance increase in different weather conditions. Altogether measured data of propulsion parameters, i.e. number of revolutions of screw propeller, ship speed, power und fuel consumption for dozen or so ships, with two Polish ships included, had been used. A methodology of evaluation of such data had been worked out, taking into account changes in slip number in relation to hydrodynamical characteristics of open-water screw propeller. Correlations suitable for practical control of propulsion system had been obtained as well as more informations on propulsion resistance properties, not sufficiently known untill now. Generalizing the research results a considerably simple relation had been formulated, allowing to forecast propulsion properties for diverse weather conditions with a ship floating against the wind, suitable both to improve the designing and the operation of ship propulsion systems.
