Adolf Dygasiński als Übersetzer: Pädagogische Biographie zwischen Wissenschaft und Literatur

Abstract

In the history of philosophical thought, translators are rarely in the forefront of interest. Their activity not only becomes omitted in the historical narratives, but is also seen as a passive transmission from one language to another. Using the example of novelist, translator and pedagogue Adolf Dygasiński, this article shows that translation cannot be seen merely as a passive process, but depends on many personal factors. But the analysis of Dygasiński’s translational activity also helps to understand his other intellectual endeavours. His translations of Max Müller or of John Stuart Mill, compared in the article with a translation by Bolesław Prus, were carefully calculated political acts aimed at a renovation of the society in a positivist spirit. But they were also programmatic texts which explain not only Dygasiński’s empiricist conception of language deployed in his naturalist novels, but also his treatment of subaltern subjects – peasants and animals – as actors with their own intentions and thought systems.<br/><br/>
