Ageing of Tansbond XT material and its influence on bonding strength: model testing

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2012, Vol 62, Issue 6

Abstract

Introduction. Orthodontic adhesives are currently used in the great majority of composite materials (chemo-light and dual-curing system). The complexity of chemical composition provides the required strength and resilience, as well as makes the dentist’s work with these materials comfortable. It also ensures the prophylactic effect in the patient (the content of fluorine compounds).Aim of the study. To determine the effect of the oral environment, simulated in laboratory conditions, on the adhesive bond strength of orthodontic light-cured adhesive, Transbond XT. Materials and methods. The study material was a light curable orthodontic adhesive, Transbond XT, the orthodontic brackets for lower incisors. Brackets were bonded on glass plates, subjected to aging in a water bath in 6% acetic quarter at 80° C for 2 hours. Brackets-glass bond strength was investigated. Results and conclusions. The results showed a statistically significant reduction in bond strength. Although the values were within the range useful for orthodontic applications, the aging of the material might be one of the reasons for the failure to maintain a fixed appliance components over the treatment period.
