Alcohol, coffee, tea – just the pleasure or also the cure? Current literature review

Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Kardiologiczny - Year 2009, Vol 11, Issue 4

Abstract

There are several recent published articles on the subject of alcohol and coffee and its impact on the incidence of cardiovascular diseases. Drinking large quantities of coffee daily decreases the incidence of stroke in woman, prevalence of myocardial infarction, diabetes type 2, and has no effect on the increased incidence of heart failure. Data from a large prospective cohort studies, contradict the popular beliefs regarding coffee. Meanwhile, the results of the NHS and HPFS studies do not indicate that drinking coffee provokes coronary events, stroke and death from any cause among men and women with diabetes type 2. Drinking coffee or tea can protect the cardiovascular system by reducing the risk of diabetes itself. The crucial role is assigned to antioxidants contained in coffee – they may have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. In a recent Spanish study, a group of researchers observed an inverse correlation between the amount of alcohol consumption and heart disease.
