Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Kardiologiczny - Year 2006, Vol 8, Issue 5

Abstract

New guidelines on the management of stable angina pectoris have been recently published by theTask Force of the European Society of Cardiology updating previous document from the year 1997. The guidelines indicate on the significance of the problem in terms of epidemiology and increasing prevalence. Proper management of stable chronic angina mustin corporate non-pharmacological treatment, medical therapy aimedat improving prognosis and at improving quality of life by reducing anginal sympotoms. The guidelines indicate on a variety of tests available for pro-perdiagnosis and prognostic stratification of the disease which facilitates appropriate selection of candidates for angiography and invasive treatment. Importantly, interventional revascularization remains the most effective symptom-relieving option, however, the impact on prognosis remains unproven. Coronary artery bypass grafting is an important option with survival benefit demonstrated in subsets of stable patients with more advanced forms of the disease.
