Abstract
A child’s education extends over many stages. The one most often mentioned in scientifi c studies is the impact of family environment on emotional and intellectual development of the child. For over 30 years the concept of family literacy (FL) has been gaining popularity and recognition. Standing at the core belief is the role of a parent as the fi rst teacher. One of the key aspects of this educational method is the perception of the relationship between the level of caregivers’ education and school success planned for their children. The use of FL to develop reading and writing skills of more than one family member was particularly interesting. Promising observations are implemented especially among immigrants where acquisition of a second language through activities is more effective if a child and a parent or even the whole family is incorporated into the process of learning the language. The aim of the article is to characterize the concept of family literacy, complemented by a review of world research in the fi eld, and an analysis of the projects implemented in this area in foreign and Polish public libraries.
