Abstract

Owing to the language, which is an irreplaceable tool of communication, people can communicate with one other and make an inter-societal exchange of information and culture. This can be realized by translation. Translation process is a unique activity which has developed from ancient ages up to present and which makes individuals and communities familiar and help them form all kinds of dialogue as well as ensures communication between two different languages and cultures. Whatever language is used, literary texts such as novel, story, fairy tale, poetry or drama, become a common heritage of the mankind thanks to poetry. Transfer of feelings, ideas and dreams in a systematic order, by use of an impressive language and through coherent verses is called poetry. Poetry, the oldest art form of literary, has been a way of efficient expression of feelings, ideas and dreams through the human history. The most important characteristic of poetry as a genre of literature is that it has a distinctive language. Translation of poetry from one language to another is still a matter of debate. In this study, we referred to the poem “Der Ölbaum-Garten” written by prominent German Poet Rainer Maria Rilke and translated by A. Turan Oflazoğlu into Turkish, and the poem “Bursa’da Zaman” (Time in Bursa) written by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar and translated by Annemarie Schimmel into German. In the translated versions of both poems the general translation strategıes were focused on in consideration with the equivalence between the source and target language. The aim of our study is to present what sort of alterations were experienced during translation process and what translation strategy was used when transferring such alterations from source language to target language. In our study, poetry translations by two different authors were evaluated in terms of general translation strategıes. As a result, it was observed that even though both poems have similarities they have more differences between the source and target languages and that word-for-word, adaptation, addition, deletion, naturalization and alteration strategies were mainly exploited.
