Alternative Investments – the Problem of Definition and Their Role at a Time of Crisis

Abstract

The 2008 financial crisis now seems a rather remote experience. Its long-term effects, however, continue to be felt even today. One of the consequences is the largely undermined confidence in banks and financial markets. What emerges as a result is increasing interest in alternative investments, such gold, art, wine or vintage cars. At the same time, economists and financiers attempt to broaden the definition of alternative investment to encompass hedge funds, private equity funds, as well as derivative and structured instruments – the very kind of product that, not so long ago, nearly caused the financial market to collapse. The paper aims to revamp the notion of alternative investment, taking an individual investor perspective and hence positioning it outside the financial market rather than as part of it. In addition, the author addresses the question of why such investments play a heightened role at times of crisis.
