An Evaluation of the Deployment of Kaizen Philosophy and Kaizen Costing in a Manufacturing Enterprise

Abstract
Contemporary business organizations are operating in a market whose rules place a high demand on their economic efficiency. The highly competitive market compels organizations to make the most of their business resources while, on the other hand, bringing down profit margins that they can possibly earn. Under difficult market conditions, many businesses look for opportunities to cut the costs of their operations in order to have a better control of their profitability and financial liquidity. This implies the need to not only manage finances effectively but also to implement innovative management ideas that can support the achievement of organizational objectives e.g. through continuous process improvement. One such management concept driven by continuous improvement is kaizen. The paper depicts kaizen philosophy and kaizen costing as viable approaches to improving process efficiency in business enterprises. Special emphasis is given to the social nature of kaizen philosophy and the role of kaizen costing in effective cost management. The goal of the paper is to present the basic principles and tools underpinning kaizen and kaizen costing, and to describe their application in managing a manufacturing enterprise based in Śląskie province. The following research methods were used in the making of the paper: literature studies, analysis, synthesis, document review, and a case study derived from the observation of an operational business enterprise.
