Alzheimer disease in the family system from the psychological perspective.

Abstract
This article presents a summing up of the work from led by authors support group for Alzheimer’s caregivers. It presents the psychological situation of caregivers including the latest studies under the stress related to caring. It also describes stress coping strategies among caregivers witch influence the relationship with patient. Authors tried to analyze the impact of diagnosis and the changing process of the disease on whole family system. They present a scheme of adjusting to this new and stressful situation. They also demonstrate the most burdensome for caretakers symptoms typical for dementia. Authors also tried to create a kind of classification of caregiver’s attitude toward patients in process of coping with stress related to care. The goal of this classification is to arrange observed attitudes in order to better understanding the caregiver’s psychological situation. This attitudes toward patients are changing in the course of time and progress of disease. Authors suggest how to treat caretakers with particular attitude toward patient. They also present preliminary program of support group for Alzheimer’s caregivers and conclusions from first group led by authors. This program as well as classification of caregiver’s attitude toward patients are only a proposal and both requires further improvement and studies of effectiveness.
