AN ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF THE TYPE OF CONTACT IN A SLIDING NODE RELATED TO THE ESTIMATION OF LUBRICATION EFFICIENCY

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2012, Vol 244, Issue 4

Abstract

The paper presents experimental work on the influence of the type of contact in a sliding node related to the estimation of lubrication efficiency using greases working in a mixed lubrication area. Investigations were carried out using two testers: a standard four-ball extreme pressure tester (point contact) and an oscillatory machine with sliding bearing (splitting contact). Investigated nodes were lubricated with four kinds of greases: Litomos EP- 25 grease, automobile grease 1S, and two compositions based on grease 1S containing 6 wt% powder of cooper or 6 wt% powder of PTFE. In tests carried out on four-ball tester, the effectiveness of the lubrication was evaluated according to two criteria: the ball wear, d, and the limiting load, Fg. In tests carried out on splitting contact (oscillatory machine), criterion of lubrication efficiency were the limiting load, Fg, and the total wear (linear) of pin and pan. The experimental results were statistically processed at a confidence level of 95% using Student’s t-test.
