An assessment of the effect of aerobic exercise on the body composition of overweight students (with emphasis on abdominal obesity) using bioelectrical impedance analysis
Journal Title: Journal of Science and today’s world - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
The aim of the present study is exploring the impact of aerobic exercise on the body composition of overweight students at the Golestan University. The present study is of quasi-experimental type which has been conducted in the field. The sample members (37 individuals) were selected among overweight female students who volunteered to participate in the study. Then, the subjects were randomly divided into two groups: the exercise group (18 individuals) and the control group (19 individuals). The exercise group performed aerobic training protocol 4 days a week for 6 weeks with 65-85% of Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) for 35-75 minutes, in the form of 5-minute walks with 2- minute rests. The subjects’ body compositions were evaluated using bioelectrical impedance analysis (using body composition analyzer) 48 hours before and after the exercises. Then the data were inserted into SPSS 19 and dependent and independent student’s t-tests were used for data analysis. The findings indicated that, after performing the training protocol, no significant difference was seen between the control and the experimental group in terms of waist-to-hip ratio (WHpR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), Body Mass Index (BMI), body fat percentage(BF%), mass of body fat (MBF) and lean body mass (LBM). However, in the exercise group, after six weeks of aerobic exercise of walking type, a significant reduction in BMI, body fat percentage and mass of body fat was observed (P≤0.05). In the control group the changes were not significant, except for changes of waist-to-hip ratio and waist-to-height ratio (P≤0.05). Based on the results it can be said that doing aerobic exercise program in the form of 5-minute walks with 2-minute rests can create useful changes in some of the body composition factors. However, the exercise duration has not been enough for reduction of abdominal obesity indices which contribute to cardiovascular diseases.
