AN EXAMPLE TO RUSSIAN EXPANSIONISM: 1944 EXILE OF THE CRIMEAN TATARS

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 39

Abstract

Russia, which has played an active role in the World History, has applied repression, persecution, assimilation, forced migration and deportation against the nations which are non-Russian or oppose to Russia. These policies can be considered as the most effective tools of the Russian expansionism. After the annexation of Crimea, Russia, whose main goals were Slavicisation (Russification) and incorporation of this region into the state, pursued here the same policies. As a result of Russian policies, the Crimean Tatars have faced migration, deportation, suffering and days full of agony. Especially, the 1944 deportation, which meant to eliminate the whole of Crimean Tatar nation, should be considered as genocide. Proceeding from this idea, the paper aims to analyse Russia’s policies against the Crimean Tatars, particularly, 1944 deportation. It also discusses the impact of Ukrainian crisis in 2013 and the following second Russian annexation of Crimea on the Crimean Tatars.
