AN INVESTIGATION OF VALUES AMONG AMERICAN AND ROMANIAN BUSINESS SCHOOL STUDENTS

Journal Title: MANAGERIAL CHALLENGES OF THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

Values play an important role in recognizing our needs, emotions and desires. They help us identify our personal goals and understand our attitudes and behaviors. Values can be regarded at the same time as goals and essential tools in achieving and maintaining a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction in our life, if they are properly understood and prioritized. The behavior is triggered, guided and supported by various forces influenced by a multitude of causal variables, including the manner in which different sets of values are weighted. In this study, we include 12 sets of values and we develop a comparative assessment of 256 American and Romanian business students' preferences. Empirical results show that the most important ones are: (a) moral, educational and relationship values for Americans, respectively (b) physical, educational and moral values for Romanians. We applied the Principal Component Analysis on the 12 variables which are sets of values, differentiating on subpopulations determined by country and gender. The results suggest that (1) in order to be successful one must have good looks (according to Romanian students) and (2) for females professional/work values are even more important if they include an aesthetic component. The article ends with conclusions and final thoughts.
