ANALYSIS AND RADIATION ECOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCES OF HEAVY EMERGENCIES AT CHORNOBYL AND FUKUSHIMA NPP
Journal Title: Вісник Кременчуцького національного університету імені Михайла Остроградського - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 104
Abstract
Purpose. To survey the processes that took place after heavy emergencies at Chornobyl and Fukushima-1 NPPs. Methodology. A thorough comparison of available estimates of radioactive emissions in space and time and ecological consequences according to different authors’ publications and official reports have been carried out. Generalization and conclusions have been made. Results. The estimate, comparative analysis and ecological consequences of the radioac-tive impact of Fukushima and Chornobyl emergencies at the environment have been considered and it has been shown that both ecological disasters share many similarities. However, the available research data is incomplete and inconsis-tent, therefore thorough reconsidering is required, especially in context of Chornobyl NPP coolant pool decommission-ing. Originality. For the first time a thorough comparative analysis of radioactive emissions at Chornobyl and Fuku-shima emergency reactors was made. It has been shown that large discrepancies in 131I and 137Cs emissions dynamics estimates may be explained by spatial peculiarities of radioactive contaminated areas formation at the initial stages of the emergency, incomplete and uncertain meteorological data. Comparing to analogous data for Chornobyl NPP, an assumption was made that the civilians radioactive exposure were reduced by 4 to 5 times, thanks to the measures un-dertaken by Japan government. Practical value. Further reconsideration of the official data on compound, quantity and dynamics of radionuclides release are required. Another effort should be made in order to reassess the current ecologi-cal safety of the Chornobyl NPP industrial site during coolant pool decommissioning by drying out due to wind and tornado hazard.
