EFFECT OF HUMIDITY AND PRESSURE OF THE FREE METHANE PHASE ON THE METHANE CAPACITY COALS OF THE METAMORPHIC SERIES

Abstract

Purpose. The study of the effect of natural humidity and pressure on the methane capacity coals of varying degrees of metamorphization is the goal of the work. Methodology. The research methodology is based on measuring the volume of methane that is emitted from coal during desorption into a storage vessel (SV) of a known volume. Studies were performed on coal 6 layers of the Donbass with a natural moisture content of 0.65% to 2.4% and a content of volatile substances of 5% to 41%. In the measurements used coal is dry and wet. The experimental technique included the saturation of dry and wet coals with methane at various pressures (up to 5 MPa). Measurements of the volume of methane in the coal were made according to the results of the reverse process – gas desorption into the evacuated SV of a known volume (volumetric method). Results. Information about the gas pressure in the SV after the desorption had been completed was used to determine the initial volume of methane in the coal. Data on the volume of methane in dry and wet coals at different pressures were used for computer optimization of the parameters of the interpolation function y = (a b x / (1+b x))+c x, which has the smallest standard deviation from the experimental points. The description of the dependence of methane intensity of coal on the pressure of methane was carried out in the framework of the model of “double” sorption. According to this model, sorption is formed by the superposition of a fixed and mobile component of a sorbed fluid, which are described respectively by the laws of Langmuir and Henry. Originality. The analysis of the initial data revealed a direct dependence of the value of the natural moisture content of the coal on their ash content. This indicates that sedimentary rocks with inclusions of hydrophilic impurities are the main collector of moisture in coal. Along with the fact that natural moisture reduces the amount of methane in coal, it reduces the degree of localization of the adsorbed methane molecules. It has been found that the energy of interaction of methane molecules with the substance of coal in naturally wet coals of the metamorphic series is always lower than in dry coals. This fact suggests that in all wet coals the value of the effective diffusion coefficient of the gas should always be greater than in dry coals. Practical value. Studies have shown that the use of hydrotreatment methods is most effective for coal seams of medium and high degree of metamorphization.
