Abstract

1960s are the years that influence and power of United States of America had increased on art and according to some theorists, New York begun to be the new center of art. In 1960s, post-industrialization period was to be noticed and first traces of popular culture and tools in terms of societies were to be occurred. In addition, sixties were located in a period after World War II, therefore considering the devastation of World War II, protests and movements against war were often organized in this sociological environment. Hippie Movement, which was also named as sexual revolution, did not define itself as a political movement but adopted and tried to apply concepts of anti-war, anti-morality, etc. Crumb, as an artist living in the beginnings of Hippie Movement, he created “Fritz The Cat” character and Fritz the Cat comics drew attention in underground literature as both for Crumb’s drawing style and his criticizing methods of sixties. In this paper, Hippie Movement has tried to be analyzed with the perspective of an artist, considering modernism and post-modernism concepts, Avant-Garde Theory and Hippie Movement, through the assessments of Critical Theory and related contemporary issues and occurrences of today. As research methods, descriptive and literature scanning and survey have been used. Although the purpose of this paper seemed to be an analyze of 1960s Hippie Movement, it also aimed to comment on today’s formations of morality and sexuality by searching meanings of sociological movements from an artist’s perspective and perception.
