Analysis of the Model of bilingual education for deaf children project with regard to pedagogy and speech therapy

Journal Title: Szkoła Specjalna - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

In Poland, bilingual education for children with hearing impairments is arousing growing interest as well as controversy among various groups involved - both in a theoretical and practical way – in developing communication skills in these children. There is no doubt that educational interventions aimed at children and adolescents with hearing impairments need to be reviewed. However, it is important to remember that since this group is not homogeneous, the special educational needs of its individual members are also very diverse. The article aims to analyze the Model of bilingual education for deaf children project, which was posted on the website of Lodz Regional Office of the Polish Association of the Deaf, with regard to pedagogy and speech therapy. Referring to the concept of the project, the Author points out the risks relating to the fact that solutions based on ideological assumptions that are incompatible with the contemporary educational conditions are being forced through in an incogitant way that does not take into account the knowledge of child development or the changes in contemporary education. Realizing the need for well-thought-out actions based on many methods and centered on the individual needs of each child and his or her family, the Author warns against the dominance of one - the most appropriate according to the project's authors - way of communication, i.e. sign language. It is a moral and educational obligation of all people who feel responsible for the education of children and adolescents with hearing impairments not to allow education for deaf children to bring about their cultural and linguistic isolation instead of promoting the idea of including them in the hearing community.
