ANTHROPOLOGICAL MATERIALS OF Х–ХIII CENTURIES FROM TOWNS OF UPPER GORYN’ RIVER REGION – DOROGOBUZH AND PERESOPNYTSYA

Abstract

In the article, ethnic features are examined on the skulls from Old Russ towns of Dorogobuzh and Peresopnytsya found in 1984, 1989 and 2003. The lands above the river Horyn are frequently mentioned in chronicles as the separate territory “Pohoryna”, “towns of Pohoryna”. In Kyiv Rus becoming period in the Horyn basin lay boundaries between tribal unions of Volynians, Drevlians and Drehovyches. According to written sources in late 11th–12th ct. volost (district) of Pohorynnia was not only a demarcative zone between Kyiv and Volyn lands. It also was a peculiar surplus fund of Kyiv princes. These princes often took the lands in Pohorynnia to grant their vassals. In this regard, we offer to consider “Pohorynnia” not only geographic but also social name. It has been denoted that female series from Pogorynya brings in itself the same mezocranic, average-faced craniological type where Polans of Kyiv and Chernigiv belong after the classification of T. Rudych. Using the typology of V. Dyachenko we have found out that male collected series belongs to Neo Polisya anthropological type of East-Slavic tribes. After typology of T. Alekseeva, male sample belongs to mezodolichocranic relatively wide-faced type where also Tivertsi, Uliches and Drevlians belong. After discrete varying features when male and females are examined together, after the analyses of the main components the similarity of investigated Pogorynya’s group to the skulls from the territory of Drevlians and Severians is revealed. While comparing the investigated group after reduced craniological data, the similarity has been discovered to Baltic group of Chud and ranges of west series.
