Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 4

Abstract

Background. Cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction, occur as a result of numerous factors interacting. There exist risk factors promoting the possibility of occurrence of certain diseases and increasing the probability of their active participation in deteriorating the human body. The aim of the study was lifestyle evaluation incorporating dietary habits, cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking and the presence of stressful situations and physical activity among patients diagnosed with myocardial infarction. Material and methods. The study included patients hospitalised due to myocardial infarction, with the group under investigation comprising 100 randomly chosen patients: 36 females and 64 males aged between 40 and 78. The research tool was an anonymous questionnaire of own authorship conducted in 2005. Results. The study revealed a common occurrence of numerous risk factors of cardiovascular diseases such as overweight, obesity, lack of physical activity, the use of psychoactive substances. Health-detrimental behaviours characterised the majority of the surveyed: 62% drank alcohol, 42% smoked cigarettes in the youth, with 20% admitting to continue to do so. The respondents were very frequently exposed to stressful situations (41%). Half of the studied pursued passive resting forms. Prior to myocardial infarction the majority of the surveyed were not concerned about their health: 31% made appointments with a doctor, 47% measured the blood pressure and 67% had the cholesterol level examined. The majority of the surveyed did not undergo prophylactic examination.Conclusions. It is advisable to implement educational measures pertaining to the prevention and eradication of the risk factors of the disease.
